The Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force has denied media reports alleging that its members beat a young man to death after detaining him on suspicion of theft at the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) office in Tejgaon.

According to information provided by the authorities, several youths allegedly entered the T&T wire warehouse area in Tejgaon at around 7:30am on Tuesday. An attached Ansar member, Shahjamal, reportedly saw one of them attempting to steal and chased him.

During the chase, the youth reportedly fell through the roof of an old tin shed. BTCL staff member Md Shaukat Hossain subsequently detained him, while Ansar members on security duty assisted in securing him following instructions from the BTCL authorities.

Ansar said Police Constable Nurul Islam later handed the detained youth over to BTCL officials P.O. Sultan Mahmud and electrician Saiful Islam. The Ansar members then returned to their respective posts.
