A growing internal dispute within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Lalmonirhat has come into the spotlight after Lalmonirhat-2 MP Rokon Uddin Babul called for the expulsion of his younger brother, Jahangir Alam, the convenor of the Kaliganj upazila BNP.
Speaking at a BNP founding anniversary rally at the Kaliganj RMM MP Government High School field, Babul accused Jahangir of engaging in activities contrary to the party's interests and demanded immediate organisational action against him.
Babul criticised internal factionalism and alleged that some party leaders had remained absent from BNP programmes for months before suddenly organising anniversary events. “Those who will not vote for the paddy sheaf but use the BNP name cannot be tolerated,” he said.
He further alleged that Jahangir had previously worked against his political interests, including supporting rival political figures, accepting a vehicle from a former Jatiya Party MP and at times forming an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.
Calling for discipline within the party, Babul urged district BNP leaders to take action against those involved in anti-party activities. He warned that grassroots activists could otherwise resist them.
The MP also criticised local leaders for putting up banners and posters without his photograph and announcing their candidacies for the chairman's post, describing attempts to achieve political success by bypassing him as “nothing but audacity.”
Babul called on BNP leaders, activists and local residents to remain united to ensure development in Aditmari and Kaliganj, urging them to resist what he described as conspiracies aimed at obstructing development.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, Jahangir Alam led a BNP procession through Tushbhandar Bazar, attended by leaders and activists of the party's affiliated organisations.
Speaking at the gathering, Jahangir alleged that conspiracies were being carried out against BNP in Kaliganj and vowed that genuine BNP leaders and activists would not allow such efforts to succeed. Referring to the party's long struggle against the Awami League government, he said those involved in conspiracies would also be removed through continued political mobilisation.
