Bangladesh’s Open team defeated Guatemala by 3.5–0.5 game points in the 8th round of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, currently being held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
In the eighth-round matches held yesterday (Thursday), Bangladesh’s International Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman, FIDE Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia and Grandmaster Niaz Murshed defeated Guatemala’s FIDE Master Cu Hor Winston Darwin, International Master Juarez Flores Carlos, and FIDE Master Ordonez Bonilla Ricardo Andres, respectively. FIDE Master Sakline Mostafa Sajid drew his game against Guatemala’s FIDE Master Linares Orellana Hector Jose.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s women’s team drew 2–2 with Norway in the eighth round. For Bangladesh, Women International Master Wadifa Ahmed, Women FIDE Master Noshin Anjum, Women Candidate Master Walijah Ahmed and Women Candidate Master Nusrat Jahan Alo all drew their respective games against Norway’s Women International Master Stanford Sheila Barth, Women International Master Hagesather Ellen, Machlik Monika, and Women FIDE Master Hagesather Nina.
After eight rounds, Bangladesh’s Open team has collected 10 points, while the Bangladesh women’s team has earned 9 points.
In today’s (Friday) ninth-round matches, Bangladesh will face Montenegro in the Open section, while the Bangladesh women’s team will take on Lebanon in the women’s section.
Mutual Trust Bank (MTB), as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, has provided financial assistance to Bangladesh’s Open and Women’s teams participating in the Chess Olympiad in Samarkand.
