Service seekers at the Gopalganj Regional Passport Office have alleged widespread harassment, irregularities and bribery, claiming that passport-related services are difficult to obtain without paying unofficial fees.
Several applicants alleged that they had to make repeated visits despite submitting the required documents, while applications were allegedly rejected over minor errors. They claimed that services became easier after approaching intermediaries and making payments.
Applicants including Utpal Mridha, Simla Rani Biswas, Prabir Biswas Raju and Karuna Rani Biswas told The Daily Industry that they were unable to submit their applications despite repeated attempts. They alleged that their applications were repeatedly rejected over various issues before they eventually obtained submission slips through intermediaries in exchange for money.
The applicants alleged that a network involving office employees and intermediaries was behind the practice. They further claimed that high-grade assistant Amit Kumar Pal was allegedly involved in controlling the network. These allegations, however, could not be independently verified.
The complaints have sparked discussion among residents across Gopalganj, with service seekers calling for an investigation into the alleged irregularities and immediate action against those responsible.
When contacted for comment, Assistant Director of the Gopalganj Regional Passport Office Nahid Newaz said he could not speak to journalists without permission from the higher authorities.
