Barishal observed World Standards Day on Wednesday, with speakers emphasising product quality, consumer rights and the use of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies.
The district administration and the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Barishal, jointly organised a discussion meeting at the Circuit House conference room in the city at 11:00am on October 14.
Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest, while Additional Deputy Commissioner Salma Parveen chaired the meeting.
Speaking at the programme, Khalil Ahmed said producing and marketing quality products were essential not only for protecting consumer rights but also for economic development, industrial growth and increasing the acceptance of Bangladeshi products in international markets.
Maintaining proper standards helps protect consumers from fraud and strengthens public confidence in manufacturers and businesses, he said.
He urged consumers to check product certification marks, packaging, manufacturing dates and expiry dates before purchasing goods.
The commissioner also stressed the need for greater public awareness, effective monitoring and proper enforcement of standards to ensure product safety, protect consumer rights and build a developed Bangladesh.
Highlighting the theme of the day, “Shared Vision for a Better World: Affordable and Clean Energy,” he said international standards were crucial for saving energy, reducing environmental pollution and ensuring the proper use of natural resources.
Expanding the use of affordable and environmentally friendly energy could reduce production costs and minimise adverse environmental impacts, he added.
He called for greater attention to environmental standards alongside the quality of products and services to ensure sustainable development.
Police Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh and BSTI Deputy Director Md Habibur Rahman attended the meeting as special guests.
Officials from government and private organisations, business leaders, students and journalists were also present.
