A four-month-old baby who lost his mother in a brutal killing has received financial assistance, clothing and personal care from Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin.
The infant, Abdullah, was brought to the deputy commissioner’s public hearing on Wednesday, October 14, by his father and aunt. The deputy commissioner took the baby in her arms, spent some time with him and provided financial assistance to help cover his living expenses, along with clothes.
Abdullah’s mother, Rufia Begum, 35, was allegedly killed by Arif Hossain, her nephew and a relative of the family, at their home in Char Sapmari village under Bhatshala Union in Sherpur Sadar upazila on September 16.
According to the report, Rufia was sitting in her yard and breastfeeding her four-month-old son when Arif allegedly attacked her with a knife, killing her in front of the infant. The incident reportedly stemmed from a minor family dispute. Arif was later arrested by Sherpur Sadar Police and sent to jail.
Abdullah’s father, Lal Mia, is a poor rickshaw puller who has struggled to care for his child following the tragedy. The family’s financial hardship has added to the challenges of raising the infant without his mother.
Speaking about the case, Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin described the killing as heartbreaking and tragic, particularly because the baby was in his mother’s arms when she was attacked.
She said she would continue to support Abdullah’s upbringing and help meet his needs, noting that his father’s limited income made it difficult to ensure the child’s future welfare.
Lal Mia expressed happiness and gratitude for the assistance provided by the deputy commissioner, saying the support would help him care for his son during this difficult time.
