Police have arrested Abu Kasem, a local Jubo League leader who allegedly escaped in handcuffs after being detained earlier, from a shrimp farm in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
He was arrested during a special operation at a shrimp farm in Nayapara village of Kutubjom Union on Saturday night (October 17), following instructions from the officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station.
Kasem, son of Muhammad, is a resident of the Bottola area of the union.
According to local sources, several cases, including allegations of assaulting police and human trafficking, have been filed against him.
Locals claimed that police had arrested him on July 11, but he escaped with his handcuffs after allegedly attacking police personnel. Following that incident, a case was filed against 30–40 people, naming 16 individuals.
A BNP leader and former union parishad chairman are currently in jail in connection with the case, according to the source.
Police said a team led by Sub-Inspector Iqbal Haider conducted the latest operation at the shrimp farm in Nayapara. The operation was carried out in connection with another case under investigation and an arrest warrant against Kasem.
Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdus Sultan confirmed the arrest, saying several cases were pending against Kasem and police operations to apprehend accused individuals were continuing.
Kasem was subsequently produced before a court after the completion of legal procedures, police said.
