State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, Asadul Habib Dulu, has announced that 23 multi-purpose flood shelters will be constructed in Lalmonirhat.
He made the announcement while laying the foundation stone for a flood shelter and primary school building at Itapota Government Primary School in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila. The project is being implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Speaking to journalists after the inauguration, the minister said that Bangladesh is widely recognized as a disaster-prone country and remains at high risk globally. Natural and human-induced disasters occur frequently, disproportionately affecting the poor and vulnerable—especially women and children.
He added that the under-construction building will serve as a flood shelter during disasters and function as a school during normal times. Such initiatives will play a crucial role in disaster preparedness and response.
The minister further said that, in line with election commitments, the government is implementing various welfare programs, including family cards, farmer cards, allowances for imams, and agricultural support initiatives. Despite global economic pressures, including the energy crisis, the government remains committed to public welfare.
He expressed hope that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the country will continue progressing toward becoming a more democratic and developed nation.
Among others present at the event were Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rashidul Haque, Administrator of the District Council A.K.M. Mominul Haque, LGED Executive Engineer Md. Kawser Alam, along with officials, political leaders, and professionals from various sectors.
