The government has conferred the prestigious “Independence Award-2026,” the highest civilian honor of the country, recognizing outstanding contributions at the national level in various fields including the Liberation War, science, literature, culture, public service, and research.
According to The Daily Industry, “the Independence Award is the highest recognition of national excellence and reflects the state’s appreciation of extraordinary contributions to nation-building.”
The awards were presented on Thursday at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital. Prime Minister Tarak Rahman handed over the medals, certificates, and honorarium cheques to the recipients.
15 Individuals and 5 Institutions Honored: This year, 15 distinguished individuals and 5 institutions were selected for the Independence Award-2026. The list was officially published earlier on March 5 through a press release from the Cabinet Division. Among the most notable names in this year’s list is former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who was posthumously awarded for her contributions to independence, democracy, and women’s education. Her award was received by her granddaughter, Zaimah Rahman.

Science, Technology, and Medicine: In science and technology, Professor Dr. Zahurul Karim was recognized for his outstanding academic contributions.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital received the award in the medical category for its decades-long service in healthcare delivery and medical education.

In the social service category, several individuals and organizations were honored, including the late Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, the late Maherin Chowdhury, Md. Saiful Haque, SOS Children’s Villages International in Bangladesh, and Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

Rural Development and Environmental Protection: In rural development, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) was awarded for its role in poverty alleviation and rural economic development.
In environmental conservation, Abdul Mukit Majumdar (Mukit Majumdar Babu) received recognition for his efforts in environmental protection and awareness.
