March 30, 2026 will be marked as a golden day in the history of sports in Bangladesh. A new horizon has opened for the country's athletes, ending the long-standing neglect, uncertainty and difficult struggle for life and livelihood. "Sports becomes a profession, family will gain confidence" - one of the main promises of the government's election manifesto, embodying this far-reaching slogan, has become a reality today. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman MP has officially inaugurated a special salary structure and sports allowance for national-level athletes. Through this, Bangladesh has granted athletes the status of professionals by the state for the first time, which is a bold step to change the face of the country's sports culture.
The talented and hard-working athletes that exist in the sports arena of Bangladesh have not been able to fully develop due to the lack of proper care and financial security. As a result of this groundbreaking step by the government, Bangladesh will now emerge as a stronger competitor in the fight for medals in international competitions.
Sports are not just a means of entertainment, but when it is established as a profession, it will also contribute to creating skilled human resources. With this bold initiative of the Prime Minister, the uncertainty in the eyes of athletes has been erased and the dream of a golden future is now shining there.
The question of what exactly is the sports allowance and why was it introduced may come to many people's minds. Basically, it is not just a financial grant, but it is a state recognition. The Bangladesh government has created a permanent salary structure to improve the living standards of national-level athletes and maintain their concentration.
The main purpose of this allowance is to encourage athletes to achieve better results for the country at the international level. When a player knows that he will receive a certain amount of salary at the end of the month, he will try to give his best on the field instead of worrying about his life and livelihood off the field. This is basically a strong foundation of professionalism.
Who will get this allowance? All athletes of the national team of all sports have been brought under this program. Among them are the regular faces of the national team, as well as para athletes with special needs. The government has ensured proper evaluation of their labor, who have been making outstanding contributions within the country and in the international arena, disregarding physical limitations.
This is an inclusive plan where talent is valued above physical ability or popularity of the event. This is the first such initiative in the country's sports history where para athletes have been included with equal status.
Talking about the timeline, although the official inauguration of this groundbreaking program is on March 30, 2026, the players will start receiving this allowance from April 2026. The players will receive their salaries at a specific time every month. To ensure maximum use of modern technology, this money will reach the players' bank accounts directly through Electronic Fund Transfer or EFT through Sonali Bank's online system. As a result, there will be no scope for any middlemen or administrative delays.
A detailed analysis of the amount of allowance and the distribution process shows that the government has taken this allocation very seriously. A total of 500 athletes will be brought under this allowance in phases. In the first phase, 129 athletes have been given the opportunity.
Each selected athlete will receive a monthly salary of 1,00,000 (one lakh) taka. Those who are currently representing the national team are guaranteed this monthly salary of 1 lakh taka. This is undoubtedly an unprecedented example in the South Asian sports community. In addition, each national athlete will be given a special 'sports card', which will further increase their social status and privileges.
The main reason for announcing this award is to create an appetite for winning in big events among athletes. When there is a guarantee of honor and respect with success, the level of hard work increases manifold. In the context of our country, the lives of athletes in all other disciplines outside the glamorous world of cricket and football were uncertain. Many talented players had to leave the playing field and choose other professions to survive in the struggle for life.
Some may have retired prematurely while struggling to support their families, while others have dropped out midway due to lack of nutrition and advanced training. Especially for those who fight for the country in sports like archery, boxing, gymnastics, swimming, weightlifting, wushu, karate, table tennis and kabaddi, this salary of one lakh taka is an unimaginable dream come true. This is the successful implementation of the promise that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had made in its election manifesto.
A unique feature of this salary structure is the performance evaluation system. To ensure that there is no sense of indifference among the athletes after receiving the benefit, their performance will be strictly evaluated every four months. Only if a player can maintain the standard and discipline of his game, will he continue with this benefit. But if there is a deficiency in performance, he will have to be dropped from the list and new talent will take his place. This rule will give rise to a positive competition in the sports field, where everyone will be forced to work their utmost to sustain themselves.
Analyzing the benefits of the sports card, it is seen that it is not just a money card. These cardholders can access advanced training of international standards. In the first phase, athletes from archery, boxing, gymnastics, swimming, weightlifting, wushu, para athletics, karate, sepak takraw, table tennis, kabaddi, volleyball, basketball, bridge and futsal are coming under this facility. This is just the beginning. Gradually, other sports will also be brought under this framework. When a player is evaluated in this way from the highest level of the state, it becomes a great inspiration not only for that person, but also for the entire sports family.
This modern plan of the current government has given an institutional form to the sports arena. The slogan "Sports is a profession, family will get confidence" is no longer just a word written on the wall, but it is the survival of thousands of players.
Through this historic initiative, Bangladesh has told the world today that we do not only fight on the playing field, we also know how to honor our heroes. The dream of a golden future that has been woven today will result in Bangladesh's name shining brighter on big stages like the Olympics or Asian Games in the near future; this is the expectation of the entire countrymen today. This radical change in the sports arena will take Bangladesh to a new height on the world sports map and will attract the young generation more to the field. A new era has begun.
