Bangladesh hit by 75% excess April rainfall

Bangladesh experienced 75% above-normal rainfall in April due to multiple western depressions, significantly increasing flood risks in northeastern haor regions. Meteorologists say the unusually prolonged rainfall lasting 8 to 10 days instead of the typical 2 to 4 was driven by intensified weather systems following a long dry spell.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, rain is expected to continue over the next five days across most divisions, with some areas likely to receive heavy to very heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre reported that water levels at six stations across Sunamganj, Netrakona, and Habiganj have already crossed pre-monsoon danger levels. Rivers such as the Surma-Kushiyara system may rise further, potentially flooding nearby low-lying areas, while other rivers in the region are also expected to swell, worsening conditions in vulnerable haor zones.
