Vote counting is in progress across 293 constituencies in the 2026 Assembly elections covering five Indian regions West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.
Across the country, 823 seats are being contested in what is expected to reshape India’s political balance.
West Bengal trend
In West Bengal, early counting trends show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) moving ahead and appearing set to end Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s long rule. The BJP-led alliance has already crossed the majority mark, according to initial results, suggesting a major political shift.
In the Asansol Dakshin, BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul is leading with 33,054 votes after four rounds, ahead of TMC’s Tapas Banerjee, who has 17,635 votes. Multiple candidates from CPI(M), Congress and others are also in the race.
Tamil Nadu developments
In Tamil Nadu, the DMK-led alliance under M K Stalin is trying to retain power, but actor-politician Vijay’s party is emerging as a significant factor, showing early signs of disrupting traditional political equations.
Other states
In Kerala, the Congress-led opposition is challenging the ruling Left government of Pinarayi Vijayan.
In Assam, the BJP-led alliance under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to retain power, though margins remain under watch.
In Puducherry, the NDA government led by N Rangasamy is also seeking re-election in a closely contested race. Counting is also underway for several by-elections across the country as results continue to unfold.
