The Rajshahi Advocate Bar Association has strongly condemned and protested the reported initiative to relocate the headquarters of the Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) from Rajshahi to Bogura, expressing concern over recent remarks by State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam on the issue.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday (August 4), the association's President, Alhaj Md Abul Kashem, and General Secretary, Parvez Toufiq Jahedi, urged the government to immediately abandon any move to shift the utility's head office from Rajshahi.

The statement said that since its establishment, NESCO has been operating its headquarters in Rajshahi, the administrative and economic hub of the Rajshahi Division. The organisation noted that the company has played a significant role in the city's economy, employment generation and administrative importance.

According to the Bar Association, relocating the headquarters of a well-established state-owned utility from its original location would be contrary to the legitimate interests and rights of the people of Rajshahi. Such a move, it said, could undermine the city's administrative and economic significance.

The association also claimed that the state minister's recent remarks had sparked concern and resentment among lawyers as well as people from different walks of life in the region.

The Rajshahi Advocate Bar Association called on the authorities concerned to cancel any plan to relocate NESCO's headquarters and ensure that its head office remains in Rajshahi.
