A court in Lalmonirhat on Tuesday sentenced four men to 10 years' imprisonment in a narcotics case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.
The verdict was delivered by Judge S.M. Shafiqul Islam of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2. The court also fined each convict Tk 5,000, with an additional three months' imprisonment in default of payment. The convicts were present in court when the judgment was pronounced.
The convicted are Ibrahim Hossain and Zakir Hossain of Chandrapur Union in Kaliganj upazila, and Mostafizar Rahman and Saddam Hossain of Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat district.
According to the case statement and court sources, a patrol team of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)-15 arrested the four men along with 98 bottles of Phensedyl and seized an easy bike during a drive on June 18, 2022. A case was subsequently filed with Hatibandha Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act, and police later submitted the charge sheet.
After examining the evidence and hearing the case, the court found the accused guilty and handed down the sentence.
State prosecutor Advocate Shamsul Alam Milon welcomed the verdict, saying it would serve as a deterrent against drug trafficking.
