A mobile court in Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari upazila has sentenced a wholesale trader of banned fishing nets to one year in jail.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gunjan Biswas handed down the sentence on Monday after conducting a raid at a wholesale outlet for banned nets at Mahishashwar Bazar in Palashi Union.
During the operation, authorities seized 59 current nets and 107 China-duari nets, which were later destroyed by burning in public.
The convicted trader, Ramzan Ali, son of Shamsul Haque of Mahishashwar village, had reportedly been selling the banned nets wholesale and retail across the Rangpur Division for several years.
