Dhaka University’s Jagannath Hall and the Sri Chaitanya Education and Cultural Association jointly observed Janmashtami, one of the major religious festivals of the Hindu community, with various programmes on Friday (September 4, 2026).
The day-long programme included a Sankirtan procession and a discussion session. The discussion, held at night, was chaired by Jagannath Hall Provost Dr Debashish Pal, with Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam attending as the chief guest.
Emeritus Professor Dr Sukomal Barua of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Jagannath Hall Residential Teacher Sanjay Kumar De, Dhaka University unit Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas, Jagannath Hall Students’ Union General Secretary Sudipta Pramanik, Hall unit Chhatra Dal Convener Madhusudan Kundu Hrishikesh, Senior Joint Convener Nityananda Pal and Member Secretary Prosenjit Biswas spoke as special guests.
ISKCON Bangladesh Joint General Secretary Jagadguru Gauranga Das Brahmachari and former General Secretary of the Sri Chaitanya Education and Cultural Association Hirendra Chandra Sarkar also addressed the gathering.
In his speech, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam called on people of all faiths and communities to work together to establish social justice and good governance.
He urged everyone to shun hatred, hostility, violence and selfishness and promote patience, tolerance and respect for others. Referring to the ideals of great personalities, he stressed the need to eliminate injustice, oppression, torture and persecution from society.
The Vice-Chancellor also called for collective efforts to build a discrimination-free and inclusive society based on truth, justice and equality.
