Banana peels, often discarded as kitchen waste, can be repurposed into a simple homemade plant feed using just water and a blender.
Banana peels contain minerals such as potassium and magnesium, which are among the nutrients plants need for healthy growth. However, banana peel water should not be considered a complete fertilizer or a substitute for proper plant nutrition.
To make it, blend 2-3 banana peels with about one litre of water until the peels are finely broken down. Strain the mixture and collect the liquid in a clean bottle or jar. If it appears too concentrated, dilute it with additional water before use.
The liquid can be poured in small amounts around the base of plants while watering. It is better to avoid spraying it directly onto leaves.
Gardeners should also avoid using it every time they water their plants. The soil should be checked first, as excessive moisture can damage plants, particularly potted and indoor varieties. Good drainage is also important.
Banana peel water can occasionally be used for many common indoor plants, but it should not replace a plant’s regular fertilising routine. Different plants, including succulents, flowering plants and fiddle-leaf figs, have different nutritional requirements.
