Around 4,000 tonnes of diesel have been imported from India through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, marking the 72nd consignment.
A total of 4.705 million litres of diesel reached the receiving terminal depot in Parbatipur, Dinajpur. The shipment began arriving through the pipeline at 9am on 12 September and the process was completed around 8:30pm on 13 September.
Under a 15-year agreement signed between Bangladesh and India in 2018, Bangladesh is set to import around 2 million tonnes of diesel from India.
Since the pipeline was inaugurated in March 2023, Bangladesh has imported a total of 330,087 tonnes of diesel from India.
The imported fuel is distributed roughly equally among the three state-owned oil marketing companies Padma Oil, Meghna Petroleum and Jamuna Oil.
The Bangladesh section of the Friendship Pipeline is 126.57 kilometres long and runs through parts of Panchagarh and Nilphamari before reaching the receiving terminal in Parbatipur. The pipeline is installed about five to eight feet underground.
