Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has called for greater public awareness and coordinated efforts to build a clean, modern and dengue-free Dhaka.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while inaugurating the Dengue Prevention and Cleanliness Campaign 2026 at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Agargaon.
The DNCC administrator said the city corporation, in cooperation with residents, has been working to achieve the government's goal of building a dengue-free Bangladesh.
He said dengue mosquito larvae were found in 60 to 70 percent of the areas inspected during DNCC drives, although the number of dengue patients remained comparatively low.
Seeking active participation from city residents, Khan said public cooperation was essential for controlling dengue, improving waste management and creating a modern, clean and liveable city.
He said DNCC had been implementing awareness and preventive programmes in every ward as part of a 90-day special dengue prevention directive announced on September 12.
The city corporation has prepared awareness leaflets under three special categories and is distributing them to households, social organisations and public spaces through zonal officials and local community leaders, he said.
DNCC has also intensified the distribution of open letters signed by the administrator to households, offices, courts, businesses, mosques and madrasas, urging residents to cooperate in dengue prevention and maintain cleanliness.
Highlighting the role of the media, Khan said journalists were among the city's key development partners as their reports and visual coverage helped the authorities identify problems across the capital's 54 wards and take prompt action.
He urged all stakeholders to maintain a positive approach and work together to protect residents from dengue during the upcoming peak period.
On traffic and cleanliness, the DNCC administrator said regular eviction drives were being conducted to free footpaths for pedestrians. He said monitoring had also been strengthened in areas including Mirpur, Uttara and Karwan Bazar to prevent footpaths from being reoccupied after eviction drives.
Khan said waste management had improved significantly compared with previous years, with cleaning operations now being conducted in two shifts along major roads with high pedestrian and traffic movement.
However, he stressed that sustainable improvement would not be possible without greater civic awareness. Residents should stop throwing waste and used tissues on roads and other public places, he said.
He also said new dustbins had been installed and measures taken to protect them in areas including Mohakhali to prevent people from dumping waste at night.
The DNCC administrator said the city corporation would continue coordinating with local representatives to provide civic services and contribute to the government's development and good-governance goals.
Following the inauguration, a colourful rally was held as part of the dengue prevention and cleanliness campaign.
Local MP Sanjida Islam Tuli and Madaripur-3 MP Anisur Rahman Talukder attended the programme as special guests. They praised the dengue prevention campaign being led by the DNCC administrator and called on residents to cooperate with the city corporation.
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Abdul Latif, members of the university syndicate, DNCC Chief Health Officer, teachers, students, officials, employees, local political leaders and media representatives were also present.
