Bibiana gas field retains 1.5 TCF reserves

Despite earlier reports suggesting depletion, new data reveals that the Bibiana gas field, operated by multinational Chevron Corporation, still holds approximately 1.5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of recoverable gas. As the largest single contributor to Bangladesh’s domestic gas production, this is a positive development for the country’s energy sector, offering hope for a sustained gas supply over the next decade.
Bibiana remains Bangladesh’s top gas producer. While previous reports from Petrobangla indicated near exhaustion, updated calculations for the 2023-24 fiscal year showed 1,667 billion cubic feet (BCF) of recoverable gas. This figure slightly declined to around 1,524 BCF (or 1.5 TCF) by the close of the 2024-25 fiscal year but remains substantial. Industry stakeholders view this as encouraging amid concerns over Bangladesh’s long-term energy security. Approximately 50 percent of the country’s local gas extraction originates from Bibiana, highlighting its strategic importance in meeting domestic demand. According to Petrobangla sources, Bibiana averaged an extraction rate of 338 million cubic meters (mcm) per month during the 2024-25 fiscal year, totaling approximately 4,063 million cubic meters-or roughly 143.48 BCF-extracted in the last fiscal year alone.
Cumulatively, Bibiana has yielded nearly 5,999 BCF of gas through June 2024, out of estimated recoverable reserves of 7,666 BCF (7.6 TCF) based on proven and probable (2-P) assessments. Accounting for last year’s extraction, the remaining recoverable reserves stand at approximately 1,524 BCF. Petrobangla’s 2023-24 annual report indicates that Bangladesh’s 29 gas fields still hold about 8.66 TCF of recoverable reserves. Among these, the Titas gas field holds the highest reserves at 1,914 BCF, with Bibiana ranking next. Currently, Bangladesh produces around 1,700 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas daily, with Bibiana alone contributing approximately 848-850 mmcf-the highest output from any single field.
Chevron operates three gas fields in Bangladesh: Bibiana, Jalalabad, and Moulvibazar. Chevron Bangladesh’s Media and Communications Manager Sheikh Zahidur Rahman affirmed the company’s ongoing commitment to Bangladesh’s energy sector. “Chevron Bangladesh continues to work and invest in partnership  with the government and Petrobangla to provide safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas,” Zahidur Rahman said. “Our team of experts is dedicated to managing these fields effectively to meet Bangladesh’s energy demand.”
Chevron’s 2023 annual report to the US Securities and Exchange Commission noted an increase of 481 BCF in the company’s gas reserves in Bangladesh due to improved reserves management, though it did not specify which fields contributed to this gain.
Engineer Md. Shoaib Banik, Director of Production Sharing Contracts at Petrobangla, confirmed that the latest data shows recoverable gas reserves exceeding 8.5 TCF nationally and suggested that Bibiana’s reserves could rise further through ongoing efforts.
“We continue to cooperate closely with Chevron and other stakeholders around the clock to ensure optimal extraction and accurate reserve estimation,” Banik stated.
Despite optimistic figures, uncertainties remain regarding the exact volume of reserves under Chevron’s control. Attempts to clarify reserve quantities from international oil companies operating in Bangladesh have often met limited transparency.
Petrobangla’s reports sometimes contain outdated or incomplete data, and Chevron maintains that some publicly available figures do not reflect current field status. Nonetheless, Bibiana remains a vital asset for Bangladesh’s energy supply.
The confirmation that Bibiana holds substantial recoverable reserves offers reassurance to energy planners and consumers. Given that half of the country’s local gas supply comes from this field, maintaining current extraction rates could sustain this vital supply for roughly another decade.
As Bangladesh’s energy demand grows, collaboration between Chevron, Petrobangla, and the government will be critical to maximizing domestic gas potential while exploring new reserves. Transparent, ongoing monitoring and reporting of reserves and production will be essential for long-term energy security and economic growth.
