Political analyst and presenter Zillur Rahman said that the interim government does not have a mandate to fundamentally change the constitution. Their job is nothing more than to draft reforms, create a platform for discussion, and restore administrative normality. Therefore, it is almost unrealistic to suddenly introduce a proportional system in the next election.
He said these things in a recent video on his YouTube channel. Zillur Rahman said that once trust is broken, it is no longer supported by declarations. One of the basic tasks of the interim government was to bring the police back from a punitive state apparatus to a real service-giving institution. They should not be outnumbered when they go on patrol. They should be protected. Video and audio should be present at the scene. Operational protocols should be transparent and accountable.
He said that the field level should be provided with visible security so that they understand that the state is on their side. In parallel, a message should also be sent to the citizens. Mob justice is not normal but punishable. The solution to the problem is through the law. This social contract of law and order is now broken.
Zillur also said that another tension is going on in the political arena. When the student movement against discrimination reached from quota reform to the resignation of the Hasina government, no one had even heard of the proportional voting system. The political calculation is simple, the party that will lag behind in the seat-based vote wants the seats to be distributed in proportion to the votes. Those who are strong want the elections to be held under the current system.
