Heavy rain floods crop land in Moulvibazar

About 170 hectares of Boro paddy fields in Hakaluki Haor have been submerged due to heavy rainfall and upstream hill runoff.
Continuous rain and water flowing down from upstream hills have caused water to enter the haor, raising fears that more cropland may be flooded. Farmers are now worried about their crops.
According to affected farmers, heavy rain fell for several hours on Friday night. Water from nearby rivers and streams—including Juri, Kachinala, Gopalachhara, and Fanai—flowed into the haor.
From Saturday morning, water started entering nearby wetlands, and by noon, paddy fields in at least two areas were submerged.
According to the District Agriculture Officer MD Jashim Uddin, out of 62,400 hectares of cultivated land in the district this season, 170 hectares have already been affected.
The Upazila Agriculture Officer said that around 8,704 hectares of land in low-lying areas, including Hakaluki Haor, are under Boro cultivation. Due to heavy rain and upstream flow, water may continue to enter these areas.
However, if weather conditions improve, the water is expected to recede quickly, and crop damage may be limited.
A senior agriculture official MD Jalal Uddin added that due to frequent rainfall since March, some fields have already been submerged. But if farmers get about a week of dry weather, they may still be able to harvest their crops.
