Rain deteriorates road in Gaibandha

Even light rainfall has caused the formation of numerous potholes along both sides of the Sundarganj-Haripur paved road, raising fears of possible collapse at several points. Pedestrians and commuters are now forced to travel under risky conditions. This road is the only direct link between the upazila and the eastern region, and thousands of small and large vehicles use it daily.
The road also serves as a connecting route to the flood control embankment built by the Water Development Board near the Maulana Bhashani Bridge. Constructed under LGED supervision in 2024, the approximately 20-kilometre stretch-from Haripur Bridge point to Sundarganj-has already developed at least 50 potholes within a week due to light rainfall.
In several locations, including Chand-er Mor and near Majid Para School, accumulated rainwater has damaged the bitumen surface, worsening the road condition. Local resident Kamala Kanta Basunia urged authorities to take immediate action, warning that failure to repair the potholes could lead to road collapse during continued rainfall.
Residents noted that deep drainage channels exist on both sides of the road, and the road was constructed using sandy soil, making it vulnerable to erosion even after minor rainfall. Belka Bazar school teacher Suja Chandra Sarkar warned that unaddressed potholes could cause serious accidents, especially at night, putting both pedestrians and vehicles.
Sub-Assistant Engineer Kazi Mahabubur Rahman stated that the contractor was responsible for maintenance for one year after construction, but that period has now expired. Currently, local workers are overseeing maintenance.
He added that proper drainage systems must be installed to prevent waterlogging; otherwise, the situation will persist. A proposal has already been submitted to higher authorities.
Upazila Engineer Tapan Kumar Chakraborty said the issue was discussed in a recent meeting, and necessary steps would be taken urgently in consultation with relevant officials.
