Dighpait drainage crisis: public suffering after rain

In Dighpait upazila town, one of the important commercial hubs of Jamalpur Sadar upazila, a lack of proper drainage has caused severe waterlogging even after light rainfall. As a result, rainwater mixed with sewage waste has accumulated on the highway, creating serious suffering for the local people.
A spot check found that about a 100-meter stretch on the western side of the highway in Dighpait upazila town, from Fensi Market to the CNG station, was flooded with rainwater and dirty drainage water. Since there is no proper system for water drainage, even a small amount of rain turns the area into a waterlogged basin. Due to long-term mismanagement, the problem has now become a permanent one. According to local residents, Dighpait is a densely populated area where about 50,000 people travel daily from various nearby unions. As the area has an important bus terminal and a CNG station, traffic pressure is also high. Because of the waterlogging, vehicles cannot stop by the roadside and are forced to halt in the middle of the road, causing severe traffic congestion. It is alleged that, due to the lack of an adequate drainage system, waste from many hotels and houses is being dumped directly onto the road. This has made the entire area polluted with foul-smelling stagnant water and sewage. Even covering their noses with handkerchiefs is not enough for pedestrians to avoid the stench. The situation has now become a major public health threat. Several businessmen expressed their frustration, saying, "Although Dighpait is an important commercial center.
, it has become difficult to run businesses because of the lack of drainage facilities. Customers do not want to come because dirty water remains in front of the shops. It has also become unbearable to sit in the shops because of the bad smell."
The businessmen further said that if an effective water drainage system is not introduced soon, the commercial importance of the area will decline and public suffering will increase further.
In this situation, residents and traders of Dighpait upazila town have called on the local administration and the Roads and Highways Department to take urgent steps to ensure a planned drainage system.
