A long-cherished dream of the people of Bogura has finally moved toward reality. Following the policy-level approval of the proposed Mokamtola Upazila and Bogura City Corporation at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reform (NICAR), waves of joy and celebration have spread across the district.
From social media platforms to marketplaces, political circles, business communities, and among ordinary residents, an atmosphere of festivity now prevails throughout the region.
According to local residents, people in Mokamtola and Bogura had long suffered from administrative complications and civic inconveniences. The decision to establish a new upazila by combining Mokamtola Union of Shibganj Upazila with four surrounding unions, along with upgrading Bogura into a city corporation, has created renewed hope and optimism among the public.
Government sources said the proposals for the formation of Mokamtola Upazila and Bogura City Corporation received approval during the NICAR meeting held at 6:00 PM on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Official gazettes and administrative procedures regarding the decisions are expected to begin soon.
Locals believe that once Mokamtola Upazila becomes operational, government services related to education, healthcare, agriculture, land administration, law enforcement, and other civic facilities will become more accessible and efficient. At the same time, trade, communication networks, and infrastructure development are expected to gain significant momentum.
Meanwhile, the establishment of Bogura City Corporation is expected to usher in a new era of urban modernization in this important northern city, including improved drainage systems, wider roads, planned urban management, and enhanced civic amenities.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mir Shahe Alam MP, said,
“An independent upazila had long been the heartfelt demand of the people of Mokamtola, while the people of Bogura had long aspired for a city corporation. With the approval at the NICAR meeting, those dreams are now on the path to reality. On behalf of the people of Bogura, I express sincere gratitude and thanks to Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.”
He further added,
“The implementation of Mokamtola Upazila and Bogura City Corporation will accelerate development in the northern region. It will create new opportunities for employment, investment, and business expansion.”
Advocate Abdul Wahab, General Secretary of Shibganj Upazila BNP and a prominent lawyer, said,
“The formation of the new upazila will reduce public suffering in accessing administrative and legal services. This is undoubtedly a landmark decision.”
Retired college teacher Professor Nazrul Islam stated,
“The implementation of Mokamtola Upazila will open new possibilities in the education sector. Bringing administrative activities closer to the people will make it easier for educational institutions to operate and receive government support.”
Local journalist Rafiqul Islam said,
“This is a long-awaited dream fulfilled for the people of Mokamtola and Bogura. We are hopeful that the declaration of the upazila and city corporation will bring positive changes in development and public services across the region.”
Business leader Sanaul Haque Jahedi from Jaleshwaritala area of Bogura commented,
“The implementation of Mokamtola Upazila and Bogura City Corporation will further expand the environment for trade and investment. It will strengthen the local economy and create more employment opportunities.”
As the news spread, residents flooded social media with expressions of joy and excitement. Numerous Facebook posts, congratulatory messages, and statements of appreciation for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and State Minister Mir Shahe Alam MP quickly went viral.
Many described the decision as a “historic achievement,” “a new chapter in Bogura’s development,” and “a milestone in the advancement of northern Bangladesh.”
Local observers believe that the establishment of Mokamtola Upazila and Bogura City Corporation will transform Bogura not only administratively, but also economically, socially, and infrastructurally, positioning it as one of the most promising regions in northern Bangladesh.
