Rapid urbanisation and industrial growth are increasing pollution levels, making many cities vulnerable to worsening air, noise, plastic and waste pollution. Experts warn that without immediate action, future cities could become difficult to live in.
In major cities of Bangladesh, vehicle emissions, construction dust and industrial waste are damaging air quality, while excessive plastic use, improper waste disposal and the filling of water bodies are disrupting environmental balance. These problems are contributing to waterlogging, rising temperatures and growing public health risks.
Environmental experts say sustainable cities require more than high-rise buildings. They stressed the need for more green spaces, parks, clean water bodies, pedestrian-friendly roads, eco-friendly transport, rainwater conservation and effective waste management.
They also called for greater participation from citizens, businesses, local authorities and social organisations to reduce pollution and build healthier, greener cities.
