Bangladesh is increasingly facing the contrasting impacts of excessive rainfall and prolonged drought, creating growing risks for livelihoods, agriculture and everyday life amid changing climate patterns.
Heavy rainfall is flooding low-lying areas, damaging farmland, roads and homes and disrupting normal activities in many regions. In contrast, prolonged dry spells are reducing soil moisture, increasing dependence on irrigation and raising production costs for farmers.
Food security is a major concern. Excessive rain can destroy crops, while drought and water shortages can severely affect agricultural production. Declining water availability in rivers, canals and reservoirs is also putting pressure on farming, fisheries and daily life.
Experts say Bangladesh needs to move beyond post-disaster relief and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture, water conservation, rainwater harvesting, efficient water management and local early-warning systems.
While extreme weather cannot be completely prevented, experts say planned adaptation and sustainable management can significantly reduce its impact.
Extreme rainfall and drought are no longer isolated disasters but increasingly part of Bangladesh’s climate reality, making preparedness and preventive action more urgent than ever.
