Public participation is essential to effectively prevent drug abuse, cybercrime, violence against women, terrorism and extremism, said Rajshahi Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Ashik Saeed.
He made the remarks at a community policing meeting held at Tanore Police Station premises in Rajshahi on Saturday.
Tanore Police organised the meeting at around 11:00am, with the DIG attending as the chief guest. Rajshahi Superintendent of Police Mohammad Naimul Hasan welcomed him with flowers when he arrived at the police station. A contingent of district police later presented him with a guard of honour.
Speaking at the meeting, DIG Ashik Saeed said the efforts of law enforcement agencies alone were not enough to prevent social crimes.
"Active participation, awareness and cooperation from the public are essential to prevent crimes effectively," he said, urging people to provide police with information about criminal activities promptly.
He called for stronger social resistance against drugs, cybercrime, violence against women, terrorism and extremism and urged the public to cooperate with police in maintaining law and order.
The meeting was chaired by Rajshahi SP Mohammad Naimul Hasan.
Officer-in-Charge of Tanore Police Station SM Masud Parvez, along with local public representatives, community leaders, people from different professions, journalists and officials of Rajshahi District Police, attended the meeting.
After the meeting, the DIG planted a sapling on the police station premises. He stressed the importance of regular tree plantation and proper care of planted trees to protect the environment and promote greenery.
