The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has sentenced Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six others to death for crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 July Uprising.
The tribunal, headed by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict on Tuesday (15 September).
The other six convicts are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Moinul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.
All seven accused are currently absconding.
The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of half the assets of Quader, Nasim, Arafat, Parash and Nikhil. The confiscated assets will be distributed as compensation among the families of those killed or injured during the July Uprising.
The prosecution accused the seven of conspiring to suppress the uprising, issuing provocative directives, organising violence and supporting armed attacks and repression.
The case is the seventh verdict delivered by the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal in cases related to the 2024 mass uprising.
The Awami League government led by then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina fell on 5 August 2024 following weeks of protests led by students and the public.
