The first phase of the Union Parishad (UP) elections is likely to be held on 12 November, with voting scheduled in 80 upazilas, Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaullah said on Sunday.
The Election Commission (EC) plans to hold elections to the country’s 4,580 union parishads in seven phases.
Under the preliminary schedule, the second phase may be held on 13 December, followed by the third on 30 December, the fourth on 17 January, the fifth on 4 February, the sixth on 22 April, and the seventh on 27 May.
Sanaullah, however, said the dates are still preliminary and may be changed.
He made the remarks while briefing reporters after an EC meeting. He said the commission had held a preparatory meeting on the UP elections and may begin the local government election process with 80 upazilas in the first phase.
The election commissioner also said the EC would hold discussions with all registered political parties regarding the upcoming local government elections.
