Police arrested 11 people, including a youth with a locally made firearm, during a checkpoint and special anti-crime operations in Maheshkhali of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.
Police set up a checkpoint in front of the Forest Office in Officepara area of Chhota Maheshkhali around Tuesday afternoon. They stopped a green CNG auto-rickshaw travelling from Maheshkhali Sadar towards Badarkhali.
When the driver allegedly tried to flee, police detained him and searched the vehicle in the presence of witnesses. A locally made light gun (LG) was reportedly recovered from a shopping bag kept under the driver’s seat.
The arrested youth was identified as Mishal, 21, son of Mohammad Mostak and Shamsunnahar of South Nalbila area in Ward No. 3 of Chhota Maheshkhali.
Police said 10 others were arrested in separate operations across different unions of the upazila. They included one accused in a GR warrant case, five warrant-listed accused, one accused in an arms case, one accused in a regular case, one arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and two accused in an arms case on police remand.
Maheshkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdus Sultan said the operations would continue to curb crime and ensure security across the island.
Police said the ownership and source of the recovered firearm, as well as the purpose for which it was allegedly being carried, would be determined through investigation.
