Nahid Islam, an adviser for Information and Broadcasting in Bangladesh's interim government, has been named to Time magazine’s prestigious "TIME100 Next" list, the American news outlet announced on Wednesday.
The 2024 list highlights 100 emerging global leaders from diverse fields including entertainment, politics, activism, and business. This year’s honorees are recognized for breaking barriers and setting new standards in leadership, creativity, and influence.
In its profile of Nahid, Time magazine describes him as a central figure in Bangladesh’s student movement, which triggered nationwide protests against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. "Nahid Islam didn’t have to get any older than 26 to help bring down one of the most powerful people in the world," Time states.
A graduate in sociology, Nahid gained prominence as one of the leaders of the protests and became widely known after being tortured by the country’s notorious intelligence services. Following intense demonstrations, Nahid delivered the students’ one-point demand: the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
Nahid is now one of two Gen Z ministers in the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Their mission: to restore Bangladesh's democratic system, which was weakened during a 15-year rule under increasing authoritarianism.
Currently pursuing a master’s degree in sociology at Dhaka University, Nahid hails from Dhaka city.
