Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Acting Commissioner Md Sarwar has stated that no major criminal kingpins are currently operating in the capital, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are on high alert to prevent any resurgence of organized crime.
Speaking to reporters on 2 May after inaugurating a new police camp in Karwan Bazar, Sarwar said authorities are maintaining strict surveillance and monitoring across Dhaka. He warned that any individual or group attempting to establish criminal influence will be dealt with promptly.
According to the DMP chief, the list of top criminals in the city is continuously updated to support ongoing crime prevention efforts. He added that multiple units—including the Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit—are working together to ensure security in key areas like Karwan Bazar.
The newly launched police camp will operate круглосуточно (around the clock) to tackle extortion and other illegal activities. Sarwar noted that local business owners can share information either confidentially or openly, and authorities will respond immediately. Additional forces may also be deployed if required.
He further highlighted that special operations targeting extortion and drug-related crimes are already underway across the capital, with several suspects arrested. Surveillance has been strengthened in different parts of Dhaka, with regular enforcement drives led by senior officials.
Addressing public concerns, Sarwar said victims can escalate complaints to assistant commissioners, deputy commissioners, or senior officials if police stations fail to register cases. He assured that allegations against police personnel will also be investigated and handled appropriately.
