A discussion meeting was held in Barishal marking the 19th World Autism Awareness Day 2026 with the theme, “Autism is not a limitation, every life is valuable.”

The event was organized on Wednesday at 11:00 am at the conference room of the District Social Service Complex Building in Rupatali by the Barishal District Social Service Office, Disability Service and Help Center, and several voluntary organizations.

Director of the Divisional Social Service Office, Shah Md. Rafiqul Islam, attended the event as the chief guest. In his speech, he emphasized that children with special needs should not be neglected, as proper care and support can help develop their hidden talents and abilities.

He said many special children are now able to perform daily tasks independently and are showing exceptional creativity and talent in various fields. He urged society to view disabilities not as limitations but as opportunities to unlock new possibilities through proper care and guidance.

The chief guest also highlighted the importance of patience, responsibility, and family support in raising children with disabilities. He noted that such children are not a burden on society or their families but valuable assets who can prove their abilities with love, empathy, and appropriate support.

He further stated that signs of disabilities can often be identified from early childhood, and timely consultation with specialist doctors along with early treatment can significantly reduce many complications.

The meeting was chaired by Acting Deputy Director of the District Social Service Office, Sazzad Parvez. Additional Director of the Divisional Social Service Office, Swapan Kumar Mukharjee, attended as a special guest.

Among others present were Disability Affairs Officer Umme Kulsum, representatives of non-governmental organizations, children with disabilities and their guardians, and members of the media.

At the end of the program, the chief guest handed over “Subarna Nagarik Cards” to four children with special needs.
