The Gopalganj District Administration held a press briefing on Wednesday (May 13) to highlight the progress of developmental activities aligned with the current government's election manifesto. District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Arif-uz-Zaman detailed several key initiatives aimed at improving public welfare and infrastructure.
The briefing underscored the government's focus on modernizing agriculture and ensuring social security as promised in the 2026 general election manifesto:Family Cards: Progress was shared regarding the ‘Family Card’ program inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on March 10, 2026, which specifically supports ultra-poor and female-headed households. Smart Farmer Cards: The importance of the ‘Smart Farmer Card’ pilot program, launched in March-April 2026, was discussed. Loan Waivers: A significant government decision to waive agricultural loans up to 10,000 BDT was highlighted as a landmark step to ease the financial burden on farmers.
To improve local water management, a major project to excavate and re-excavate 25 canals across Gopalganj is currently underway. Project Oversight: The work is being jointly supervised by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and the Bangladesh Water Development Board. Current Progress: Notable progress has been made on the Angul Kata and Bhinnabari canals, both of which are 50% complete. Transparency: Addressing journalists' concerns regarding difficulty in accessing information at local offices, the DC assured that all departments would be instructed to provide necessary developmental data locally.
The administration also emphasized initiatives for environmental conservation and women's empowerment: Environmental Action: Large-scale tree plantation programs are being implemented to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Women’s Transport: Special transport facilities are being introduced to make commuting easier and safer for women. Drug-Free Society: Speakers at the event, including high-ranking police and agricultural officials, stressed the need for public awareness to build a drug-free society alongside physical development.
The briefing concluded with a call for media professionals to actively cooperate in disseminating information about these welfare projects to the grassroots level.
