Golam Faruk Majnu has been elected president and Muhammad Abu Abid has been elected general secretary in the central committee election of the Sammilit Sajjad Parishad (SSP), the apex organization of grassroots journalists in the country.
The new leadership was elected after a day-long voting at the National Press Club in the capital on Thursday (May 14). According to Election Commission sources, the election was held through direct voting by the journalist representatives of the SSP district committees from different districts of the country, where two to three representatives from each district committee exercised their voting rights.
The newly elected president Golam Faruk Majnu has been playing an active role in the field of journalism for a long time as the editor and publisher of the Dainik Biplobi Janata Patrika. On the other hand, General Secretary Muhammad Abu Abid is currently serving as the Chief Editor (Planning, Online and Current Affairs) of Mohona TV.
Both of them are already widely known and appreciated in the journalist community due to their uncompromising leadership in the field of achieving the professional rights of journalists, freedom of the media and protecting the interests of grassroots journalists. Their courageous stand against journalistic torture and harassment in different parts of the country has created new confidence among the members of the organization.
Other important positions of the committee are as follows: Md. Nesar Uddin, Md. Fazle Newaz and Md. Anwaruzzaman Azad as Vice-Presidents; Ed. Hasan Alam Sumon and Md. Habibur Rahman as Joint Secretaries; Md. Kamrul Islam, Md. Miraj Hossain, Md. Jamal Sikder and Md. Shahidul Islam as Organizing Secretaries. Apart from this, Subhankar Sen Shuvo has been elected as Treasurer, Meem Akhter as Office Secretary, Abdul Mannan as International Secretary, Md. Zakir Hossain, Women's Affairs Secretary Nipa Akhter, Cultural and Sports Secretary RK Ripon, and Publicity and Publication Secretary Abdullah Al Noman were elected. Several other professional journalists, including Enayet Hossain Khan Rimon and Shariful Islam, were elected as executive members.
