The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) conducted a mobile court operation on the Meghna River on July 7 to ensure safe and accident-free river navigation and protect lives and property.
The drive was led by BIWTA Executive Magistrate Ms. Meher Nigar Tanu and covered areas under the jurisdiction of the Ashuganj–Bhairab Bazar River Port, including the Bhairab Bazar launch ghat, Ashuganj cargo ghat, and Bhairab ferry ghat.
During the operation, authorities inspected both operating and moored vessels and found multiple violations of inland water transport regulations. A total of nine vessels were fined a combined Tk55,000 for various offences.
The mobile court was assisted by the Deputy Director of the Marine Safety and Traffic Management Department of the Ashuganj–Bhairab Bazar River Port, along with officers and staff of the Ports and Traffic Department, the concerned Traffic Inspector and Traffic Supervisors, members of the Bangladesh Ansar, and the River Police.
BIWTA said such enforcement drives will continue regularly to strengthen safety standards, ensure compliance with navigation rules, and promote orderly movement of vessels on the country's waterways.
