Bangladeshis have emerged as the largest group of migrants arriving in Italy by sea during the first half of 2026, despite a significant decline in overall Mediterranean migration compared with the previous two years, according to the latest data released by Italy's Ministry of the Interior.
The figures show that from January 1 to 8:00 a.m. on July 7, a total of 14,623 migrants reached Italy via the Mediterranean Sea. Of them, 4,314 were Bangladeshi nationals, accounting for nearly one-third of all arrivals and making Bangladesh the leading country of origin.
The latest statistics underscore the continued prominence of Bangladeshi migrants among irregular migration flows to Europe, even as stricter border controls and changing migration patterns have reduced the overall number of sea arrivals. Bangladesh Tops the List: According to the
Italian Interior Ministry's provisional data, Bangladesh was followed by Somalia, which accounted for 1,702 migrants, while Sudan ranked third with 1,371 arrivals.Other major source countries included:Pakistan - 1,185 migrants, Algeria - 1,106 migrants, Egypt - 936 migrants.
The list also included migrants from Eritrea, Tunisia, Mali, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Iran, South Sudan and Guinea.Authorities said the identities of another 1,163 migrants are still being verified and have been included under unidentified nationalities in the provisional statistics.Italian officials noted that the figures remain subject to minor revisions following the completion of identity verification procedures.
Overall Sea Arrivals Decline Sharply: While Bangladesh topped the nationality list, the overall number of migrants arriving in Italy by sea has fallen considerably this year.The ministry's data show that 31,430 migrants reached Italy during the same period in 2025, while 26,664 arrived during the corresponding period in 2024.Compared with those years, this year's total of 14,623 arrivals represents a decline of approximately 53 percent from 2025 and about 45 percent from 2024. Migration analysts attribute the decrease to tighter border management, enhanced cooperation between European and North African authorities, and increased efforts to disrupt human trafficking networks operating across the Mediterranean.
Bangladesh Migration Continues to Raise Concerns: Despite the decline in overall migration, the large number of Bangladeshi arrivals highlights the continuing trend of irregular migration through dangerous sea routes.
Many Bangladeshis attempting to reach Europe travel through multiple transit countries before crossing the Mediterranean with the help of human smuggling networks, often risking their lives during overcrowded and hazardous sea journeys.
Authorities and international organizations have repeatedly warned that such routes expose migrants to exploitation, trafficking, detention and life-threatening conditions."The fact that Bangladesh remains the largest source of sea arrivals in Italy indicates that economic pressures and the demand for overseas employment continue to drive irregular migration despite the significant risks involved," a migration expert told The Daily Industry.
"Strengthening legal migration pathways, improving domestic employment opportunities and enhancing public awareness about the dangers of irregular migration are essential to addressing the problem."
Need for Safe and Legal Migration: Labour migration specialists say Bangladesh has made significant progress in expanding legal overseas employment, but irregular migration remains a challenge because of false promises made by trafficking networks.
"Irregular migration exposes workers to enormous financial and personal risks," an overseas employment analyst told The Daily Industry."The government should continue expanding legal labour migration opportunities while intensifying action against human trafficking syndicates that lure people with unrealistic promises of easy access to Europe."
The expert added that closer cooperation between Bangladesh and European authorities could help combat trafficking networks while promoting safer and more regulated migration channels.
Authorities Continue Monitoring: Italy's Interior Ministry said the published figures are preliminary and may be adjusted slightly after authorities complete nationality verification and registration procedures.The latest data nevertheless highlight Bangladesh's continued prominence in Mediterranean migration flows and underscore the need for coordinated international efforts to expand safe migration options while discouraging dangerous and irregular journeys across one of the world's deadliest migration routes.
