Emphasizing on further expansion of Bangladesh-Japan cooperation in higher education, research and human resource development. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam has urged students to play a role in nation-building by utilizing higher education and research opportunities in Japan.
He said these things while addressing the ÔJapan Education Seminar 2026Õ jointly organized by the Japanese Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh (JUAAB) and the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka University on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at 10:30 am.
The program was presided over by Professor Dr. A. T. M. Zafrul Azam, President of Japanese Universities Alumni Association in Bangladesh (JUAAB). Professor Dr. A. T. M. Zafrul Azam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of Dhaka University, spoke as a special guest. Abdus Salam and Head of Public Relations & Culture of the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka Yu Aoyagi.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam in his speech further said that Japanese universities are well-established in the international arena for high-quality education, research, technological innovation and academic excellence. For Bangladeshi students, studying in Japan is not just an opportunity to obtain an academic degree; rather, it is a unique field to develop research skills, technical capabilities, professional qualifications, intercultural communication and leadership qualities.
He said that students need to know in detail about the various scholarship programs of the Japanese government and the educational and research opportunities of universities and utilize them properly. Although there are some linguistic and financial challenges, it is possible to overcome these obstacles and achieve international quality education through sincere preparation, perseverance and proper guidance.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that Bangladesh is currently moving forward on the path of rapid economic and technological progress. To make this progress sustainable, there is no alternative to developing skilled human resources in engineering, agriculture, information technology, medicine, environmental science, business education and other important sectors. Students who study in Japan can make an important contribution to national development by using the knowledge, technology, innovative thinking and international experience they have acquired when they return home. He urged the students to use their skills to find innovative solutions to the country's existing problems and create new employment opportunities.
Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam said that the relations between Bangladesh and Japan are based on a long-standing foundation of mutual respect, trust and friendship. Japan is one of Bangladesh's most reliable development partners in infrastructure development, education, human resource development and economic growth. If mutual cooperation in higher education and research increases, new partnerships will be developed between the universities, researchers, industries and the young generation of the two countries.
He said that Dhaka University is strongly committed to expanding joint research, teacher-student exchanges, scholarship programs and institutional cooperation with various universities and research institutions in Japan. Such initiatives will play an important role in improving the quality of education and research of the university through internationalization.
Addressing the students, the Vice-Chancellor said, "We must move forward with confidence to fulfill our dreams. Through hard work, dedication and perseverance, we must develop ourselves in such a way that the knowledge and skills acquired are effectively used for the development of the country and human welfare. In the future, you will further strengthen the friendly relations between Bangladesh and Japan."
The seminar discussed in detail various aspects of higher education, research, admission process, scholarship facilities, student life and Bangladesh-Japan academic cooperation in various universities in Japan. Teachers, students, researchers of Dhaka University, students interested in higher education in Japan and Bangladeshi alumni of various universities in Japan participated in it.
