A training workshop on human rights was held at the Applied Democracy Lab of the University of Dhaka (DU) on Monday, organized by the lab.

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Abdus Salam attended the workshop as the chief guest.

Professor Mohammad Ainul Islam, director of the Applied Democracy Lab, chaired the programme, while Professor Kazi Mahbubur Rahman, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, addressed the event as a special guest.

In his speech, Professor Abdus Salam described young people as the key force in shaping the future of the country. He stressed the need to ensure peaceful coexistence among people with differing opinions and to build a democratic society based on mutual respect and tolerance.

He also called on young people to become more actively involved in practising human rights and democracy. Referring to the importance of research, he said new ideas should be developed through research in the fields of social sciences and democracy, just as they are in conventional scientific laboratories.

He praised the role of the Applied Democracy Lab in this regard, saying the lab is providing young people with training on human rights, democracy and other important issues. He also stressed the need to expand such initiatives in the future.

A total of 38 students from 13 departments of the University of Dhaka participated in the workshop.
