A newly built RCC arch bridge in Uzirpur, Barishal, constructed at a cost of nearly Tk 10 crore, has become a major attraction for local residents and visitors from different areas.
The bridge is drawing crowds every day because of its attractive architectural design and picturesque natural surroundings. Many locals have compared its design with bridges in the Hatirjheel area of the capital.
According to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), the 55.06-metre-long RCC arch bridge has been constructed over the Dhamura Canal on the Sanuhar R&H–Dhamura GC–Jalla–Satla GC road under the Program for Supporting Rural Bridges project. The project was financed by the Government of Bangladesh and the International Development Association (IDA).
The project cost Tk 9 crore 94 lakh 23 thousand 573. Construction began on May 4, 2023, with April 28, 2026 set as the completion date. LGED implemented the project, while M/S MHAI-Shams-Upakul (JV) was the contractor.
Officials said construction was completed within the stipulated time. After its inauguration, the bridge was opened to traffic. As a result, people travelling along the Sanuhar-Dhamura-Jalla-Satla road no longer face the difficulties they previously experienced in crossing the canal. The bridge has made road communication in the area easier and more efficient.
The bridge's main attraction is its aesthetic design. Its arch-shaped structure stands out from a distance, while the canal and surrounding natural landscape have created a scenic setting. The presence of visitors is particularly noticeable from afternoon until evening.
Local resident Mohammad Litu Mia said bus services on the Satla-Barishal road were once completely disrupted after the previous bridge collapsed. People also faced various problems crossing the Dhamura Canal.
He said the new bridge has greatly reduced the long-standing communication problems of local residents while also enhancing the beauty of the area. It has now become not only an important communication infrastructure but also an attractive landmark of Uzirpur.
The executive engineer said the project's success was made possible by the visionary leadership of LGED's chief engineer, the modern construction approach, effective supervision and development-oriented planning of Barishal district Executive Engineer Mohammad Al Imran.
He also credited the professionalism, dedication and tireless efforts of the Uzirpur upazila engineer and technical officials for completing the bridge on time while maintaining high quality.
Local residents said planned beautification; lighting and visitor-friendly facilities around the bridge could turn it into one of Uzirpur's major tourist attractions. This could boost the area's beauty and tourism potential while also having a positive impact on local businesses and economic activities.
