In a devastating head-on collision on the Sylhet-Dhaka Highway, at least eight construction workers have lost their lives, and seven others have been critically injured. The accident occurred in the Dakshin Surma area early Sunday morning.
The Incident
The collision took place around 6:25 AM near Tetli Bazar. According to police reports, a pickup truck carrying a group of construction workers was heading toward Lalabazar when it collided head-on with a timber-laden truck traveling from Chattogram.
The impact was so severe that four workers died instantly at the spot. Four others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Authorities have identified four of the deceased so far:
Suruj Ali (60): Bhatipara, Dirai, Sunamganj.
Ms. Munni (35): Daughter of Abdul Basir, Seshasti, Dirai, Sunamganj.
Md. Badrul (30): Son of Sujat Ali, Lalargaon, Jalalabad, Sylhet.
Md. Faridul (35): Son of late Nur Salam, Nurnagar, Dirai, Sunamganj.
The identities of the remaining four victims are yet to be confirmed.
The Injured: Seven others are currently undergoing treatment, with doctors describing their conditions as critical. The injured include residents from Sunamganj, Habiganj, and various parts of Sylhet city.
Md. Riazul Kabir, Deputy Commissioner (South) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, confirmed the details of the tragedy.
"The workers were traveling to their workplace in a pickup when the collision occurred. We are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident. Both drivers fled the scene immediately after the crash, and a police operation is underway to identify and apprehend them."
Traffic on the highway was temporarily disrupted following the accident but was later cleared by the police and fire service units.
