For decades, Tamil Nadu politics has been dominated by the Dravidian-based parties Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, shaping the state’s political landscape since the Congress decline in 1967.
Now, a new political shift appears to be emerging with actor Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay, entering politics. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, formed in 2024, is positioning itself as a third major force in the state.
Early indications from the 2026 Assembly election trends suggest that TVK is gaining significant ground, potentially turning the traditional two-party competition into a triangular contest.
Vijay’s political journey began through his fan-based social movement “Vijay Makkal Iyakkam,” which later expanded into grassroots political activity. His films, often addressing social issues like corruption, farmer distress, and governance failures, have also contributed to his public image as a people-centric leader.
He has stated that his entry into politics is not for entertainment but to fight injustice, calling politics a “battlefield” for public service. He has also declared ideological opposition to the BJP and political rivalry with the DMK.
Analysts say his decision to quit acting and focus fully on politics sets him apart from other film-star politicians and signals a more serious long-term political commitment.
While final election results are yet to come, Vijay’s rise is already seen as a potential turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, challenging the long-standing Dravidian power structure.
