Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Monday reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting journalists, describing modern journalism as one of the most challenging professions amid the rapid flow of information.
Speaking at an exchange meeting held at the Barishal Circuit House conference hall, the minister said journalists face the difficult task of identifying and presenting accurate, objective news to the public. He stressed that the media serves as a mirror for the state and society, making responsible journalism essential for a democratic and civilized nation.
The meeting focused on enhancing the professional welfare and security of journalists in Barishal Division, as well as strengthening the activities of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust.
Swapan said the government would provide maximum support to improve journalists' welfare, professional development, and workplace safety, noting that a strong media sector is vital for the country's overall progress.
The event was attended by Kawsar Hossain Khondkar, member of the Trust's Board of Trustees; Shahjahan Saju, publicity and publication secretary of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ); and Azad Alauddin, president of the Barishal District Journalists' Union. The session was chaired by Mohammad Abdul Bachir, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust, while Hafizur Rahman Hira, general secretary of the district journalists' union, moderated the program.
During the discussion, journalists from across Barishal Division raised recommendations on professional security, expanded welfare benefits, medical assistance, financial grants, and skills development. The minister assured participants that feasible proposals would be implemented in phases.
Following the meeting, financial assistance checks from the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust were distributed to 39 journalists from the districts of Barishal, Jhalokathi, and Patuakhali.
