Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has opened a children’s playground, a Shaheed Minar and a renovated park in Ward 4 of Mirpur-13, with Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan saying the city corporation is giving priority to creating open recreational spaces for residents.
Speaking at the inauguration on Tuesday, Khan said the initiative was being implemented in line with commitments to make parks and playgrounds accessible to the public.
He said the DNCC plans to gradually reclaim, renovate, clean and reopen parks and playgrounds under its jurisdiction. A committee led by the regional executive officer and comprising respected local residents will be formed to oversee the maintenance and management of the newly opened facilities.
The administrator said the park and playground would be brought under CCTV surveillance within the next one and a half months. He also urged local residents to remain vigilant against vandalism, disorder and antisocial activities.
Khan said children and students should use the field for recreation while maintaining focus on their studies. He added that the facility would remain open to residents during designated hours and closed at other times.
He also said steps were being taken in cooperation with the local police to prevent drug use and other antisocial activities in the area.
On broader development plans, Khan said the DNCC would work to address waterlogging in the Mirpur-Kafrul area by recovering the No. 22 Teki Canal and developing facilities, including a walkway along the canal.
He also said illegal posters attached to metro rail pillars would be removed following a 72-hour deadline. After the cleaning work, the DNCC plans to introduce graffiti art and other beautification initiatives there.
Regarding law and order, Khan said the city corporation would maintain a “zero tolerance” approach toward antisocial and criminal activities and that offenders would not receive exemptions based on political or organisational identities.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Asaduzzaman presided over the inauguration ceremony. Chief engineers, local police officials and residents attended the event.
