Bangladesh has entered a new era in its sporting landscape with the introduction of a formal salary structure and monthly allowance for national-level athletes, a move widely seen as a transformative step toward professionalising sports and ensuring financial security for players.
The initiative was officially launched on March 30, 2026, marking a historic milestone in the country's sports sector. Under the programme, athletes representing the nation will now be recognised as professionals and provided with a fixed monthly income, fulfilling a long-standing demand within the sporting community.
The policy, introduced under the slogan "Sports as a profession, security for families," aims to address decades of uncertainty faced by athletes, many of whom struggled to sustain their careers due to financial constraints. Officials say the new framework will allow athletes to focus fully on performance without worrying about livelihood issues.
Structured financial support and recognition
Under the scheme, selected national athletes will receive a monthly salary of Tk100,000. In the first phase, 129 athletes have been brought under the programme, with a target to gradually include up to 500 athletes across various disciplines.
Payments will begin from April 2026 and will be disbursed directly to athletes' bank accounts through electronic fund transfer systems, ensuring transparency and eliminating intermediaries.
In addition to financial support, athletes will receive a special "sports card," granting access to a range of benefits, including advanced training facilities, specialised medical care, and opportunities to train under international coaches.
The programme also includes provisions for career transition and rehabilitation after retirement from active sports.
Inclusive approach across disciplines
The initiative covers athletes from a wide range of sports, including archery, boxing, gymnastics, swimming, weightlifting, wushu, para-athletics, karate, sepak takraw, table tennis, kabaddi, volleyball, basketball, bridge, and futsal. Notably, para-athletes have been included on an equal footing, reflecting a more inclusive approach to talent recognition.
Officials say the move will help unlock the full potential of athletes who previously lacked adequate support, particularly in disciplines outside cricket and football.
Performance-based continuation
To ensure accountability and sustained excellence, the programme includes a performance evaluation system. Athletes' performance and discipline will be reviewed every four months. Continued eligibility for the allowance will depend on maintaining required standards, while underperforming athletes may be replaced by emerging talents. This mechanism is expected to foster a competitive environment and encourage consistent performance at both national and international levels.
Boost for global competitiveness
Sports analysts believe the initiative could significantly strengthen Bangladesh's position in international competitions by providing athletes with the financial stability needed for long-term training and development. Previously, many talented athletes were forced to abandon their sporting careers due to financial hardship, lack of nutrition, and limited access to professional training.
The new policy aims to reverse that trend by making sports a viable full-time profession. Athletes have welcomed the move, noting that expenses related to training, fitness, and nutrition can amount to Tk30,000 to Tk40,000 per month-costs that will now be easier to manage under the new system. Encouraging youth participation The reform is also expected to have a broader social impact by encouraging greater youth participation in sports. With improved financial prospects and institutional support, families are likely to be more willing to support children pursuing careers in athletics.
Officials say the initiative is only the beginning, with plans to gradually expand the programme to include more athletes and disciplines in the coming years.
Experts view the policy as a bold and necessary step toward building a sustainable sports ecosystem in Bangladesh-one that not only nurtures talent but also ensures dignity and security for those representing the country on the global stage. With this move, Bangladesh signals its ambition to elevate its presence in international sports and create a system where athletic excellence is both recognised and rewarded.
