The Kishoreganj district administration has extended financial assistance to a woman van vendor whose livelihood came to a halt after she suffered a broken leg in a road accident.
Shiuli Begum, a resident of Bhairab who currently lives in a rented house in Maria Union of Kishoreganj Sadar, has been supporting her three children by selling vegetables and fruits on a van since being abandoned by her husband. Despite financial hardship, she continued working every day to provide for her family until the recent accident left her bedridden.
In a gesture of support, Deputy Commissioner Sohana Nasrin on Monday handed over Tk 10,000 in emergency financial assistance to Shiuli Begum. The district administration also announced that she would receive an additional Tk 30,000 on Tuesday.
Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Kamrul Hasan Maruf said the initial assistance was provided to meet her urgent expenses. He added that arrangements would be made for her permanent employment once she recovers.
The district administration has also requested the authorities of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj to ensure all necessary medical support for her treatment.
Expressing gratitude for the assistance, Shiuli Begum encouraged other women facing hardship not to lose hope.
"Many women suffer from poverty even when they have husbands or relatives. Some choose to end their lives because they cannot bear the hardship. I want them to stay strong and step forward. By the grace of Allah, I have been able to do what many men cannot," she said.
Praising her determination, Deputy Commissioner Sohana Nasrin described Shiuli Begum as a symbol of courage and resilience.
"Shiuli Begum is an extraordinary woman who has single-handedly taken responsibility for her family despite immense challenges. In this difficult time, the district administration stands firmly beside her. We will continue to support people like her whenever they face hardship," the deputy commissioner said.
