A 14-year-old karate student of the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) died after being electrocuted at the BKSP Martial Arts Campus in Savar on Tuesday night, bringing an abrupt end to the promising career of a young national athlete.
The victim, Yasar Ahmed Jim, was a resident of Kutubjom Nayapara in Moheshkhali Upazila of Cox's Bazar and the second son of Mokhtar Ahmed, head teacher of Meheriapara Government Primary School.
According to family members, Jim was electrocuted at around 11:00 p.m. His body was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy before being transported to his hometown for burial.
Jim was regarded as one of Bangladesh's promising young karate athletes. He represented BKSP in the martial arts event at the Notun Kuri Sports-2026 program and recently competed in the 10th Cadet, Junior, Under-21 and Senior South Asian Karate Championship 2026, as well as the 2nd Under-14 South Asia Karate Cup, where he achieved notable success.
He had also earned a place in Bangladesh's junior team for upcoming South Asian karate competitions featuring athletes from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.
The news of his death spread quickly on social media, triggering an outpouring of grief across Moheshkhali. Moheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Imran Mahmud Dalim expressed condolences to the bereaved family, while relatives and well-wishers mourned the loss of a talented young athlete whose future had shown great promise.
